When I first sampled her music on humblebeast.com, it immediately reminded me of Lauryn Hill. It wasn't until I listened to the ninth track that this made a lot of sense. A whole song was devoted to the former female member of the Fugees. It is abundantly clear who inspired her to create the album The Art of Joy.
I must say, Jackie Hill Perry is a Christian hip-hop treasure! Her ability to wield words with rhythm is masterful, reminiscent of the best of 90s hip-hop. But proficiency and style are not the only things that is to be admired about this artist. Her songs convey a meaningful message about her life in Christ. Not many are able to weave their faith into a well-crafted lyric.
For these reasons, I would encourage you to check out her album at http://www.humblebeast.com/the-art-of-joy. And if you are interested, there is also a short biography about her.
Update: Jackie Hill Perry posted an article on her Facebook feed explaining how John Piper's Desiring God inspired her album. Very cool!
