Leave Your Church!

Are you considering leaving your church? What is a good reason for leaving a church? What is a bad reason?

If you struggle with any of these questions, perhaps you might want to read: When It's Time to Leave A Church, by Pastor H.B. Charles. I have, personally, been challenged by what he has to say on this topic. I think it is a helpful reflection for all Christians as they consider their involvement in the local church.

That being said, perhaps I can share some of my thoughts...

Pastor Charles identifies three biblical reasons for leaving a church: 1. A gospel reason; 2. A doctrinal reason; 3. A personal reason. I don't find any reason to argue against what he has written here. I just have something to add. There is at least one other really good reason you should leave your church: missions.

I understand that this is probably implicit Pastor's Charles' article. But I think it is important to make explicit that which is implied. A very healthy, gospel-centred church can still be a place of departure. It can be a springboard for Christians to plant churches and participate in world evangelism.

The challenge to church leaders is to recognize who in their congregation needs to be sent out. Who needs to leave so that Jesus could be made known?
